Research Facilities

Research facilities working on technologies with potential application to this project are listed below.

• Center for Sensors and Sensor Technology at Oklahoma State University. Their site lists several other government sponsored sensor centers, of which they are the biological sensor unit.

• Applied Physics Laboratory at Univ of Washington. Doing Navy acoustic research including determining effect of surface ship wakes on sound.

• National Prototype Center at Oak Ridge TN. Developed the ESD (Enclosed Space Detection) system.

• U.S. Navy Coastal Systems Station Researching methods of detecting frogmen and ways frogmen can avoid detection.

• Acoustic Research Laboratory in Singapore. Researching ANI (ambient noise imaging - the use of background noise in water to detect presence of objects).

• Florida Atlantic University Dept. of Ocean Engineering Using ANI (ambient noise) for biological sensing presence of marine mammals.

• Engineering Institute for Trauma and Injury Prevention (EITP) at the Univ of Tennessee. Examined human trauma resulting from contact with outboard motors. Another Univ of TN group is working on propeller guards.

• Institute of Sound and Vibration Research (ISVR) at Univ. of Southampton UK. Researching shallow water acoustics, signal processing and biological sensing. ISVR Consultancy Services is the commercial arm of this research.

• Other Federal and Navy labs may have relevant technologies.
